Outdoor Attractions

Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge includes 2000 acres of waterfowl safe land and an educational facility for visitors. There are many species protected here, and the refuge has youth camp education programs and year-round events.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation has several parks and facilities for local use. Only some of these are listed here. Check their website for more information.

Birch Hill Recreation Area: This borough park features a Nordic / cross-country skiing center, and disc golf course (in season)

Big Dipper Ice Arena: An indoor ice rink for fun skating and hockey. Birthday party reservations are available.

The Mary Siah Recreation Center: This indoor pool is available year round on summer/winter schedules. It is heated to 85 degrees, and a spa and sauna are also available. The center also has a weight room, conference room, and art room.

North Pole's Wescott Pool is 82 degrees, has six lanes, and features a waterslide and dropslide. Swimming lessons are available.

The Salcha River State Recreation Site is only about a half hour south of Wainwright on Alaska 2/Richardson Highway. It has camping sites, a boat launch, and a public use cabin.

The Harding Lake State Recreation Area: is a little over half an hour south of Wainwright on Alaska 2/Richardson Highway. The recreation area has boating and fishing, hiking trails, many campsites, picnic sites, and athletic facilities.

Georgeson Botanical Garden: This University of Alaska Fairbanks facility is a research center, but welcomes visitors interested in native, wild, and cultivated plants. Alaska grows them big, especially cabbages and dandelions, and you can see them for yourself here. This is the northernmost botanical garden in North America, and mainly exists to help develop the horticulture of Alaska. Some areas are available to rent for events. They are looking for volunteers.
